   REB Enzyme Subtypes

Subtype

Defining feature

A

Asymmetric recognition sequence

B

Cleaves both sides of target on both strands

C

Symmetric or asymmetric target. R and M functions in one polypeptide

E

Two targets; one cleaved, one an effector

F

Two targets, both cleaved coordinately

G

Symmetric or asymmetric target. Affected by AdoMet

H

Symmetric or asymmetric target. Similar to Type I gene structure

M

Subtype IIP or IIA. Require methylated target

P

Symmetric target and cleavage sites

S

Asymmetric target and cleavage sites

T

Symmetric or asymmetric target. R genes are heterodimers

   Methyltransferases subtypes:

alpha

Alpha motif order: fgg-TRD-dppy

beta

Beta motif order: dppy-TRD-fgg

gamma

Gamma motif order: fgg-dppy-TRD

   Notes:

  • fgg denotes the generic sequence motif found in the SAM binding site
  • dppy denotes the generic sequence motif in the catalytic site
  • TRD denotes the DNA target recognition domain
