REB,
or Restriction Enzy Base is a comprehensive
database which gives the complete information about restriction
enzymes, methyltranferases and related proteins involved
in the process of restriction modification.Restriction enzymes
have come up with a wide range of applications in the recent
past including Southern hybridization analysis, DNA sequencing
and global gene expression analysis etc. Their importance
to biotechnology is apparent when looking through the catalogue
of any company that supplies reagents for molecular biological
work.
Keeping this in mind REB has been developed as a user friendly
database which gives a wide range of details about restriction
enzymes which include the recognition sequence, type, subtype,
growth temperature, organism, isoschizomers and type of
cuts produced.
In addition to this REB also includes information about
related proteins like nicking enzymes, orphan methyltrannsferases,
homing enzymes, specificity subunits, control proteins and
methyl-directed restriction enzymes.
There are currently more than 4000 biochemically- characterized
enzymes in REB which include around 600 enzymes which are
commercially available and also the company which supplies
them. Apart from this REB also provides the user with a
very efficient multitask tool which finds the recognition
sequences and the corresponding restriction enzymes for
any DNA sequence given as input.
Thus REB has turned out to be a very potential database
for commercial purpose as well as for molecular biology
research.
The REB is supported by IBI Biosolutions Pvt. Ltd., a company
certified by American Quality Standards Registrar and recognized
by NABCB that aims to become a complete Innovation Driven
and Knowledge Process Outsourcing company in the Life Sciences
Arena.
